Nantucket Fishing Report from Capt. Shawn Bristow for July 10th, 2008

By Captain Shawn | July 13, 2008

As I look back through the log book for the past 3 weeks all I read is bass, bass, bass. The striper fishing has been great, consistent all day action. Thats not to say the blues have not been mixed in though. The early morning and evening charters have seen the best striper action with the morning being the prime time. It seems as the sun gets higher in the sky the blues thicken up and your bluefish to bass ratio goes from 5 bass to 1 blue, up to, 2 bass for every 5 blues. Still good odds, but not straight bass. The offshore rips that hold bass have been loaded, the six hour trips are having a blast catching stripers on top water plugs, hogy’s and almost anything else to chuck at them. Some results and highlights from the past 3 weeks are: 39# and 36# bass, 8# fluke, 12# bluefish. I have been on the lookout for Bonito, any day now were going to get them… The tuna fishing is becoming a consistent fishery, with fish to the south and also the east of the island. We managed to go 2 for 3 on Friday, large fish was 54 inches. I’ll be heading out there a bunch in the next 2 weeks so we will see. For more info checkout squaretailoutfitters.com

June 2008

By Captain Bill | June 26, 2008

It was a slow start to the bass season here on Nantucket but finally the waters have warmed up, the bait has arrived and the stripers are in full swing! For the last week or so…bass fishing here on the island has been fantastic with fish to 30-35 lbs not uncommon on flys and plugs. Right now …bluefish and stripers are hungry and pretty much all around Nantucket. This action should continue well into July with the best bites coming on the early morning tides.

Earlier this month …we even found a small run of bluefin tuna close to shore which tore up our 15 lb inshore rods with fish upwards of 100lbs!! The action was brief…but for 3 days we had our hands full with one fight lasting over 3HOURS!!!

Bluefish are all around Nantucket… and the bass are in the rips!! Right now is a great time to get out there if you can! More reports to come soon…Capt. Bill Toelstedt

False Albacore!

By Captain Bill | September 13, 2007

False Albacore seem to be the hot ticket right now …here on Nantucket. The past several days in particular have produced better numbers of albacore doing there thing off the west end of the island. Small metals can account for the best bite although this morning with the wind blowing 25+ it was near impossible to throw the smaller jigs. As if albies were not difficult enough… large amounts of weeds have invaded the area in Madaket and it looks like we may even get the typical “fall” brown water after this latest big blow! But the fish are there and showing themselves…
The bonito are getting scarce but if you put in the effort there are still a few to be caught!
As far as bass… we are seeing the bite slowly return for fall….with the bigger fish bieng caught down deep on wire line in the usual spots.
Tuna are still hot off the east end… last thursday fishing with Capt. Shawn Bristow and his crew we landed 12 fish from 45″ -55″. Hopefully the weather will allow us another shot in the coming days…

August 2007

By Captain Shawn | September 4, 2007

The combination of good weather and good fishing made the month of August fly. The Bluefish and Bonito were thick all month, 40 fish charters not uncommon. The common size bone was 4 pounds, though we did manage to catch 2 fish over 10 pounds. The Striped Bass fishing was slow with the odd catch in the mornings on an incoming tide. We did take several nice bass on bait, nothing consistant on light tackle. The majority of my fishing in August was offshore chasing Bluefin tuna. The fish averaged 60 pounds with the consistant catch of a 60-70 inch (100-175#) fish each trip. The troll bite continues to be hot, catching 5-20 fish a trip. Light tackle opportunities have been difficult, only because of thick fog. We did manage to land several fish on heavy spin, in the 60-90 pound class. The tuna bite should continue through September with some larger fish trickling in…

Not much to report here on Nantucket in terms of  fly-fishing …With all nice weather and calm winds we have been taking advantage and heading offshore for shark and tuna. This past weekend we scored well on Mako’s …as the boys from the FDNY landed 6 Mako’s in 2 days of fishing. Mostly small ranging from 75-175 lbs…but fun either way. Only one jumped for us but everyone was looking so we all got to see it!
Monday we headed out in search of Bluefin and scored fairly well as we landed 3 of 5 hookups…all of the tuna were in the 45-47″ range…
Capt. Shawn Bristow was out east several times this past week and scored well on the tuna each time out!
And yesterday we headed out with Dave Linton and his crew on the “Lisa B” in search of big sharks!! We were rewarded with 2 monster blue sharks well over 300# and a good sized Mako that Dave’s son Chip fought well as it nearly spooled out our Tiagra 50W!
We also had a WHITE MARLIN swim right at us and under our boat… unfortunatly we thought it was a shark at first and did not have time to get a bait ready… but it was very cool to see… especially since it was like glass out there and he swam right under us!!
The bonita bar has definately changed over the past week… there is still bait… but the fishing is sporadic at best… hopefully when we get out of this east wind pattern maybe it will comeback to life a bit. i have heard of albies at the vineyard and one caught here on great point. other than that i have not yet seen one… but i hope to soon! capt. bill

Nantucket Outfitters report for 8/16/07

By Captain Bill | August 16, 2007

Bonita fishing remains steady here on the island… although this morning seemed to be the first day anyone seemed to have trouble on the “bar”. This past week we had a mix of weather with winds from all directions…but it did not seem to matter as most folks scored on both north and south winds. We had a heavy blow out of the southwest yesterday afternoon which seems to have stirred things up a bit and resulted in scatterd bait and fish this morning.

Bluefishing seems to be the next best thing right now… although they are not quite everywhere as they have been the last several weeks. Blues to 15+ lbs are common and plentiful if you can find the schools.

For those of you fishing the south side of the island there has been a large number of leatherback turtles around …a great site to see…but be wary as they do not seem to get out of the way very fast.

BONITO ARE IN!!!

By Captain Bill | August 8, 2007

Bonito! After several weeks of scattered sightings and reports… the bones have finally arrived on Nantucket in full force!! Larger numbers of fish have been caught on daily basis as well as fish pushing the 10 lb mark. The typical spots off the West End have been producing good results as well as a few less popular spots off to the East. For those of you that have not been out to the “bar”… the bonito are gorging themselves on huge clouds of 2-3″ sandeels… To the East they are on a mix of these same sized sandeels as well as micro-sized squid less tha 1″ long.  Spin rodders are catching the largest volume of fish on swimmers… with the fly guys having to work a bit harder to connect. One nice thing about catching these ”fast fish” on a flyrod, though…besides the fact that it is more challenging… it allows the fish to run more freely(on a ”single hook”) and results in more of those typical bonito “screaming drag” runs. Many times with the spin rod the second treble hook can get fouled on the side of the bone’s face cutting down on its leverage. Either way, these are fast fish …so make sure your mono is fresh, your drags are in good repair… and hold on!

Nantucket Outfitters report for 7/17/07:

Fishing continues to hold strong here on …and around Nantucket. Bass fishing remains strong going into the 3rd week of July… especially for those willing to get an early start and venture a bit further out. Bluefish continue to eat us up in many of the rips holding bass… but if your arms can hold out your bound to catch your share of stripes.
For the midday trips we’ve been concentrating on BIG blues off both the north and south sides with great results. For many of those who have’nt had much saltwater fly fishing experience… its a good way to get introduced to the game without having to cast very far.
We have also done a bit of bottom bouncing this week …scoring nice numbers of fluke on the east side. Bruce Turner’s son nailed a nice 4.44 lb’er a few days back on the “Tashima”… and Capt. Shawn Bristow fishing the “Squaretail” has been producing consistantly out east on Tuna!
