Nantucket Striper fishing continues to be great
By Captain Shawn | June 28, 2009
The bass fishing on nantucket continues to be great, even though the weather continues to make fishing a challenge. After the northeaster on Monday and Tuesday(40 knot winds) I have fished everyday with good results. Some notable catches have been a 25# bass on fly for Chris Jones, and a 35# bass on fly for Steve Collins. Nice fish steve. The rip fishing continues to be great, with mostly bass, though the blues have started to show. The offshore fishing continues to be good as well, tunas have been caught all week, with some good fishing yesterday, saturday the 27th. Water temps are still below average, I had 62 on the south side of the island this morning, roughly 5 degrees below average. Im expecting the bass fishing to continue for a couple more weeks with these low temps and no break in the weather.

May 30/31st Striper fishing on Nantucket
By Captain Shawn | May 31, 2009
The striped bass fishing continues to get better and better as the weather continues to get better and better. I spent the weekend fishing the main harbor, seeing lots of fish and catching a bunch as well. Saturday evening produced fish to 30 inches, catching most in water to shollow for my boat. We also managed to catch the first bluefish of the year, a 6 pounder. Sunday mornings trip was better fishing, sunny skies and light winds. We left the dock around 5am and produced fish until almost 9am. No real big fish, though had a couple swirels that will not be forgotten. I would expect the fishing to continue to pickup, with good weather comes good fishing this time of year. Fishing outside to harbors will begin to get better as the water temperature rises. Expect the rip fishing to get good any day. Word has it the vineyard to seeing larger fish and the capecod canal is producing fish to 40 pounds.

First fish report of 2009
By Captain Shawn | May 7, 2009
Just a quick report. The word on the street is bass are being caught at the pond heads. This is usually the first place the fish arrive on island. Expect the fish to be small, but a bunch of them. I’ll keep you posted!!! For what it is worth, the Nantucket Harbor is 2 degrees warmer this year than last!! Look for fishing to really start to pick up the end of the month and the best bass fishing to be the last 3 weeks of May. Dont be surprised if the tunas are not far behind, I checked the book from last year and June 8th, thats right June 8th, was the first day we caught one on light tackle. Check back often Ill do my best to keep you updated…

More Bones, tons of blues while fishing on Nantucket
By Captain Shawn | August 8, 2008
Well, the bonito fishing continues to be an option, while bluefish are still ruling the show inshore. We have had several very good inshore trips for bonito, catching over 20 on several charters and also catching an 11 pound, 30 inch bonito. Most of the bones are being taken on spin gear, though we have put our time in with the fly and the results are not there. If we can get some consistent wind Id imagine we will have some consistent bonito fishing. We have had 4, working on 5 days of east wind which has made things a little confused. With this Southwest wind we going to get for a couple days the fishing should get red hot. The bluefins offshore have also gotten a little inconsistent, but the fish we have been getting have been nice ones!!! Ill be out there tomorrow so we will see. More Bonito being caught fishing on Nantucket
By Captain Shawn | July 31, 2008
The bonito fishing here on Nantucket continues to pick up. This morning we went 5 for 9 with a million blues mixed in. The fish have all been large ones as well, biggest being 10 pounds… We still are not seeing the numbers on bones like last year, but everyday the fishing is getting better. The striper fishing has really slowed, with the warm water and opening of commercial season stripers have been hard to come by. Best bet is early morning trips. If the cold water pushes back to the west, the fishing should pick back up again to the east. The tunas have been consistent offshore. We have getting a half dozen bites a morning, though one morning we caught 9 fish and another 6. All the fish have been between 90 and 150 pounds, or 55-65 inches in length. The whales have also been amazing, seeing then very active in the morning, often times breaching 10 times in a row… It truly unbelievable site to see.. For more information on fishing Nantucket, or if you want to book a charter, email Capt. Shawn…

Bonito fishing has begun!!
By Captain Shawn | July 25, 2008
The bonito have started to show the last couple days. The bait on the south side of the island started to thicken with sand eels in the 2 to 4 inch range. The bar has a far number of blues on it with some others mixed in. The fish we have caught have been large, one being 10#’s. I have also heard of a 10# 29 inch bone being caught on the Vineyard.

Nantucket Fishing Report from Capt. Shawn Bristow for July 10th, 2008
By Captain Shawn | July 13, 2008
As I look back through the log book for the past 3 weeks all I read is bass, bass, bass. The striper fishing has been great, consistent all day action. Thats not to say the blues have not been mixed in though. The early morning and evening charters have seen the best striper action with the morning being the prime time. It seems as the sun gets higher in the sky the blues thicken up and your bluefish to bass ratio goes from 5 bass to 1 blue, up to, 2 bass for every 5 blues. Still good odds, but not straight bass. The offshore rips that hold bass have been loaded, the six hour trips are having a blast catching stripers on top water plugs, hogy’s and almost anything else to chuck at them. Some results and highlights from the past 3 weeks are: 39# and 36# bass, 8# fluke, 12# bluefish. I have been on the lookout for Bonito, any day now were going to get them… The tuna fishing is becoming a consistent fishery, with fish to the south and also the east of the island. We managed to go 2 for 3 on Friday, large fish was 54 inches. I’ll be heading out there a bunch in the next 2 weeks so we will see. For more info checkout squaretailoutfitters.com

June 2008
By Captain Bill | June 26, 2008
It was a slow start to the bass season here on Nantucket but finally the waters have warmed up, the bait has arrived and the stripers are in full swing! For the last week or so…bass fishing here on the island has been fantastic with fish to 30-35 lbs not uncommon on flys and plugs. Right now …bluefish and stripers are hungry and pretty much all around Nantucket. This action should continue well into July with the best bites coming on the early morning tides.
Earlier this month …we even found a small run of bluefin tuna close to shore which tore up our 15 lb inshore rods with fish upwards of 100lbs!! The action was brief…but for 3 days we had our hands full with one fight lasting over 3HOURS!!!
Bluefish are all around Nantucket… and the bass are in the rips!! Right now is a great time to get out there if you can! More reports to come soon…Capt. Bill Toelstedt
